Coaching and Driver Training to Make it Easy for a Young Adult with ASD to Get a License
A driver’s license means so much more than being able to drive. It represents freedom, independence and is a sign of adulthood. For people with Autism Spectrum Disorder, driving may seem out of reach. We are excited to introduce you to our program that helps someone with ASD go through all of the steps to safely drive on their own.
If you’ve met one person with Autism, you’ve met one person with Autism. We work to understand your individual fears, anxieties, triggers and then build a customized approach to help you get your driver’s license.
Our Driving With ASD team includes a highly trained occupational therapists, specially certified driving instructors and Autism Transitions Consultants that are program alumni that are now safely driving with ASD.
Some people are ready and able to drive and have no question. Others may want to drive, but are worried if they have the required functions. And then others may have all of the ability but lack the desire and motivation. Our first step is to help you gain confidence and ability to drive.
We start our education in a virtual classroom environment. We offer an 6-part live webinar series specific to people on the Autism Spectrum. We will teach sessions on sensory issues, disruptions, scripting, anxiety, getting pulled over and so much more. This is a perfect starting point for the motivated new driver or the nervous new driver that needs some confidence.
After you grasp the theory, the next step is actually driving. If you are in CT, MA or RI, we have driving instructors ready to go. If you are outside of the Northeast, we can help you find the right driving school for you.
